Teaching is not so much a job as an adventure. I find that I learn nearly as much from my students each year as they learn from me. When I was receiving my credential at Cal, I had a teacher by the name of Parker Stack. He liked to tell us how he would respond whenever he was asked what he did for a living: "I'm a teacher." "Oh? What do you teach?" "I teach students."

The curriculum is, of course, central to what we do as teachers, yet we mustn't lose sight of the fact that we work with youngsters who are still learning what the world has in store for them. We expose them to a wide range of knowledge in the hope that they will discover something to become passionate about and to arouse their intellectual curiosity. We also take it upon ourselves to help them grow as people. We listen to them, talk to them, show compassion to them, have high expectations of them, challenge them, and at times comfort them. They are so much more than just students to us.
